本次研討會主題策定為「 設計・美學：時代與流變」，期冀以獨特的角度探討設計在時代變遷中的變化，以及其美學變化的意義。「設計」這個詞語在二十世紀初被開始廣泛運用後，就經常被認為設計就該隨著時代的變遷而變化；在很多時候，我們幾乎想都不想，就認為設計就該隨著時代的變遷而變化，不然就會產生落後於時代的設計。變化一直如影隨形地附著在設計這個詞語上，形成對於設計的認知中，一個非常廣泛而普遍、甚至可以說刻板印象式的概念。然而，我們也不禁要反問，設計真的是如此嗎？

我們嘗試用四個子題，來梳理這個豐富又複雜涵構變化。這四個子題包括：「建築設計」、「工業設計」、「服裝設計」以及「媒體傳達設計」。在這四個領域中，設計隨著時代變遷產生了什麼變化？有哪些重要的論述被提出？它們曾遭遇了哪些挑戰？以及，在這些設計中，有什麼樣的美學被生產和再製？這些美學的意義為何？又對後來產生了什麼影響？最後，我們也想問，設計是否真的隨著時代的變遷而變化了？

The theme of this seminar is “Design and Aesthetics: Epochs and Transitions,” aiming to explore the changes in design throughout different eras from a unique perspective, as well as the significance of aesthetic shifts. The term “design” began to be widely used in the early 20th century, and it has often been assumed that design should evolve with the changing times. In many instances, we instinctively believe that design should adapt to the evolving era; otherwise, it would result in outdated designs. Change has consistently been closely associated with the concept of design, forming a widespread, even stereotypical notion in our perception of design.

However, we can’t help but question whether design truly adheres to this principle. We attempt to dissect this rich and intricate construct of change through four subtopics: “Architectural Design,” “Industrial Design,” “Fashion Design,” and “Media Communication Design.” In these four domains, how has design transformed alongside the passage of time? What significant discourses have emerged? What challenges have they encountered? And within these designs, what kinds of aesthetics have been generated and reproduced? What is the significance of these aesthetics? Furthermore, what impact have they had on subsequent developments? Ultimately, we also wish to inquire whether design has genuinely evolved in tandem with the changing epochs.
